appearance
Built tall and lean, Suzaku stands about 178 cm (5'10"). Though he seems slender almost to the point of being weak, this is very misleading. Not only is Suzaku extremely athletic, he's studied martial arts since he was a child and also has military training. So what appears to be a twiggy boy is actually a trained soldier.

Moderately tanned from spending time outdoors, Suzaku has medium brown hair that curls ever so slightly at the ends, giving him a somewhat tousled appearance. His bright green eyes and ready smile seem to be cheerful and content, but they are misleading. Very few people are allowed past the walls he's put up around himself.

His fashion sense, is basic at best. Used to having very little choice in what he wears, Suzaku tended to be more comfortable in the various uniforms he's worn throughout his life. His choice of civilian wear reflected that, consisting of plain shirts, long coats and boots. He does have a slight fondness for sunglasses though.

One physical mark that Suzaku tries to show as little as possible, is the scar from a gunshot wound when he was a child. Located on the right side of his body, about a hand's breath above his waist, the scar stretches from his side and partway around his back.
personality
On the surface, Suzaku seems simple enough. Polite, kind, humble, noble, naive, a model citizen. He has an amiable nature and is generally easy to talk to and get along with. Respectful of others, Suzaku tends to prefer avoiding conflicts when possible (despite his job in the military). Once he's familiar enough with someone, he tends to reveal the fact he has something of a silly streak underneath his seriousness and enjoys having a joke now and then. All in all, Suzaku is about as nice as guys get, putting other people's welfare and happiness before his own.

But Suzaku didn't used to be like that, and in a way really isn't. In the same way he hides behind a cheerful face, Suzaku hides behind a cheerful personality. Underneath the façade of niceness, Suzaku can be very selfish and more than a little arrogant. On occasion he'll overestimate his own abilities and need to be bailed out. Though he's learned to control his short temper somewhat over time, that temper remains and is ferocious in its release.

Some things Suzaku can't change about himself though, like his sheer stubbornness and force of will. And his tendency to fixate on the past more than some would consider healthy. Suzaku hates himself for what's happened the past, and in an attempt to atone, he constantly places himself in harms way. But to those that don't know his history, he simply has a reckless streak or, to the idealistic, a good deal of courage.
history
The only son of a powerful Japanese politician, Kururugi Genbu, Suzaku lost his mother at a young age. They he never really lacked much in his childhood, he didn't have much either. Not that he particularly minded. He was pretty well content at the Kururugi shrine, playing in the large shed that made up his room and training in martial arts with Todo Kyoshiro.

But around the time he was ten Suzaku started to notice things. His father was agitated over something, there were more guards around the shrine, and people Suzaku didn't recognize and were meeting with his father at strange hours of the night. Normally his father would tell him who his visitors were, but when Suzaku asked, his father brushed the question off with a nervous look. Suzaku refused to listen when his father insisted he stay in his room whenever there were visitors and started eavesdropping on the meetings.

Suzaku wished he hadn't. His father was working to push a dangerous piece of legislation through, something that had earned him numerous threats against his life and his son's life. But he refused to back down, determined to finish what he started. Frightened, the next day Suzaku begged his father to let the legislation go. This resulted in a lock being placed on Suzaku's door so he wouldn't listen in on any more meetings.

But Genbu's enemies caught up with him. While attending an addresses by a close foreign associate, he was assassinated. Unfortunately, not only was Suzaku caught in the side by one of the bullets, the daughter of Genbu's associate was crippled as well. Though Suzaku recovered quickly, a scar remains on his side and back. Afterwards, Suzaku was taken in by his martial arts teacher, and they moved to the other side of the city, to distance themselves from the shrine.

With Genbu's death, the legislation failed, and the threat to Suzaku's life was gone. But the boy was changed and his guardian could tell. Nevertheless, martial arts gave Suzaku the focus he needed in his life and he learned how to hide his pain. Because deep down, he blamed himself for what happened to his father. As he'd been standing on the stage, waiting for the event to be over, Suzaku had spotted a man in the crowd as he'd drawn his gun. He knew from the official reports that there'd been more than one gunman, but Suzaku had seen one of them. But instead of shouting a warning, his throat had locked in fear. And his father had died, and the little girl that had been sitting on his father's other side had been crippled.

Suzaku was popular at school. He had many friends, was well liked by the girls, and was the sports representative on the student council. His grades tended to lack in areas, but he was an all right student. Though he wanted to go directly into the military after graduating high school, his guardian disapproved and stated that he'd have to attend university first. But Suzaku was determined and joined anyway, since he was of age, but out of respect for his teacher, took the option of having the military pay for his schooling. So after finishing his basic training, Suzaku applied to Evergrove University and was accepted.
